Some Things to Consider

There are many ways to approach naming your pup. Do you prefer a human name (Jack, Jill), a classic cute puppy name (Buddy, Patches), or are you going for a descriptive name (Fluffy, Spot)? Another thing to consider is if that name will be one to grow with them as they age. Just like when we name our kids, those names need to be able to grow with them, so consider these factors before we get into the questions!

Q1: What is their personality like, in a few words?

Thinking about their personality is a great starting point. What is their personality like? Are they funny, silly, a little more shy, sweet? Do you have a velcro dog or an independent queen on your hands? Write down some adjectives to describe them. You can use these as their names or find names describing the specific personality traits. For example, some names are Goofy, Happy, Bouncy, or something like Dumbo… if that’s what they’re like <3!

Q2: What do they look like?

Next, think about how and who they look like. This is a great name determinator. Are they expected to be a standard size, medium, mini, or teacup-sized? What color patterns do they have, tri-colored, sable, phantom? If they have tri-colored hair like the Bernese Mountain Dog, you can try something like Bernie. If you know they are going to be big and know they have bold personalities, you can think of characters that speak to those traits (i.e. Bear, Hulk, Thor, Dumbo, etc).

Choosing a name that speaks to both their character and looks always just makes sense! The name seems to just fit, which is what we’re going for. If you’ve got a name already, let us know in the comments. If not, let’s keep going!

Q3: Do you have other dogs and do you want their names to match?

If you have other dogs, animals, or even kids, OR if you want other dogs, this is your chance to make sure your dog’s name can match with a theme that you like! Maybe you want all of their names to start with A or maybe you want them to be named after the 7 dwarfs in Cinderella, the world is your oyster!

Whether you want a matching theme or name, this is your chance to make it happen! This should be fun and exciting, so don’t overthink it!

Q4: Do you want a classic name or something that’s trending?

What’s popular right now where you live? A name like Nala or Daisy is definitely popular right now. These names are popular among dog owners currently, and their popularity will fade. However, other names are popular year-round and never truly fade out of popularity. Albeit, the names are more generic, but some of them are Bear, Buddy, and Spot. Remember to choose a name you like, even though it might not be the most trending right now. Trends fade, this is a name you’ll be yelling for the next 8-13 years!

Q5: Does it roll off your tongue? Will your pup be able to learn the name quickly?

Though choosing a name like Mr. Wigglebutt sounds cute, it probably isn’t the easiest to say when trying to get your dog to not chase that flying duck. It’s a little too long, and will most likely be quite hard for your pup to learn their new name.

Choose a name that’s one syllable, easy to say, and just rolls off the tongue. Something short, sweet, and simple.

A quick tip is to say the name out loud a few times when testing out names, to see if you really like it. Don’t be shy, yell it out and see what you think!

Q6: Can it get mixed up with common command words?

This one is more technical but still extremely important. You don’t want to choose a name that can get easily mixed up with common commands. If you name your dog Split, which sounds similar to the command “sit”, some miscommunication might happen there. It’s not the end of the world if you love a certain name, just know that they will need to learn their name well first, before learning the command.

How to Teach Them Their Name?

Now that you’ve figured out your favorite bernedoodle puppy names and narrowed it down to the name, the final step is to teach it to your pup. Simple enough if done often. Within 2 weeks, even sooner knowing that bernedoodles are smart cookies, they will know their name.

Here’s how it’s done. First, practice saying their name and giving them a treat right away. They will start associating that word with a treat, they’ll know it’s of importance. Eventually, start to increase the time between saying their name and giving them the treat. Start to only give them the treat when they give you their attention. Now that you’ve got that down, your pup will know their name. Continue to practice this, and they’ll surely remember!

Conclusion

Our bernedoodle is named Jill, after Jack & Jill. My partner had a family dog named Jack, which he loved so much, so we went with Jill <3. We like human names, it makes it fun knowing they’re a part of your family like that.

Congratulations on your new puppy and bringing a new furry friend into your family! Best of luck with the whole puppy phase… and then the teenager phase!
